Volunteer Mentoring

Connect for LIFE!

You can be part of a network of supportive volunteer mentors to help young adults achieve success and self-sufficiency. Dedicated volunteer mentors like you provide a safe, nurturing and fun atmosphere to foster a sense of hope and belonging in LIFE Project participants.

What is a Volunteer Mentor?

A volunteer mentor is an individual who works with a group of like-minded mentors who together, build a network of support to help young adults ages 18-21 overcome life’s challenges. This support system paves the way for youth participating in ACH’s LIFE (Learning Independence from Experience) Project to have long-term success as an adult in today’s world. A mentor uses their time and talents to establish a relationship that promotes self-confidence and self-sufficiency for those young adults aging out of the foster care system.

Service Commitment and Screening

Volunteer mentors undergo a thorough screening process that includes a written application, in-person interview, criminal history check, reference check, drug screen, fingerprinting, sex offender registry review, and tuberculosis test. The application and screening process takes place on a rolling basis. Required pre-service training for volunteer mentors is offered 2-3 times a year.

In order to build trust and consistency with young adult mentees, volunteer mentors are expected to meet a minimum one (1) year commitment that entails at least 6-8 hours per month for the duration of services. Training is required and provided by ACH prior to and during service for volunteer mentors.

Some opportunities may require screening and a minimum age of 18 depending on the volunteer opportunity and program served.
