Adoption

It only takes one caring adult to change the life of a child.

Every child deserves a loving family and the chance to live in a safe and supportive environment. At ACH, we are committed to finding and equipping individuals who are willing and able to open their hearts and homes to grow their families and help kids heal. We offer families the opportunity to select the best avenue of licensure for them—foster only, foster to adopt, or matched adoption.

Foster Only is the best option for those who simply want to provide temporary care for children who, due to safety concerns, have been removed from their biological family and placed into foster care. The goal of foster care is to provide a safe, loving, and nurturing home for children who have suffered trauma and loss. The main goal of foster care is the reunification of the child(ren) with biological family or fictive kin.

Foster to Adopt is for those who, after providing temporary care for multiple children in the foster care system, wish to adopt in the event the child(ren) become legally free to adopt. Foster to adopt is, in essence, the same as being a foster parent (providing temporary care) until a child is available for adoption.

Matched Adoption is for those who simply want to adopt children who are legally free after being in the foster care system. Our philosophy at ACH is to find good families for deserving children who are in need of loving and nurturing caregivers.

From your first inquiry through training and beyond, applicants can count on ACH Child and Family Services to be prompt and responsive. Our goal is to support you. Because the children we serve have experienced trauma, abuse and/or neglect, we thoroughly train our prospective foster and adoptive parents for situations they may have never anticipated. Only then, can we ensure you are prepared to properly care for children who need a loving, nurturing home.

Frequently Asked Questions

When you meet your foster child, it’s just the beginning of what we hope will be a long and mutually beneficial relationship. When you give your foster child the secure and nurturing home he or she deserves, your child will give you so much more in return. As a member of the ACH family, you always have access to our Foster Care Specialists. They are available for consultations, home visits and assessments to help you get through the challenging times.

Do I get to determine which children I adopt?

Yes, you will be able to determine the age range of children you are willing to work with.

How long does it take to get a placement?

This is a common question with no easy answer. Each family will have a unique experience and there’s not an average length of time that would be helpful in predicting how long a particular family will wait.

Do I have to be married?

No, you do not have to be married. You can be single, but you cannot cohabitate. You can also be divorced, but not in the middle of a separation.

Do I need to own a home?

No, but you will need to meet some space requirements for each child. For example, you will need at least an 8×10 (80 square foot) room for up to two children. Additional children will require more space.

How much does this cost?

There is an upfront cost of $41.25 for fingerprinting. This will be refunded if you get licensed by ACH.

The Department of Family Protective Services (DFPS) will reimburse day care costs for families where both parents work at least 40 hours per week. This sometimes takes 2 to 3 weeks to set up, so you will want to plan to cover day care costs for at least 2 to 3 weeks for any child in your care. The ability to transport children to visits and appointments is also a requirement for all licensed foster parents.

Do I have to be employed?

You don’t. You do however need to have enough income to cover the costs of adding children to your home.

How long does it take to become licensed?

Our goal is to license all families within 90 days.
